Whey Protein vs Plant Protein: Which is Better?

Protein is a very essential macronutrient for women.

Protein is a macronutrient and an essential source of energy in the body. Our body uses protein to build and repair tissues. Now, even if we aren’t growing in height, our cells and tissues (a collection of cells) need protein. Protein is an important building block of bones, muscles, cartilage, skin, hair and blood. Protein is also needed to make enzymes, hormones, and other body chemicals.

So, if you are someone who wants speedy recovery from wounds, healthy muscle recovery after exercise, healthy hair, skin and nails, and a healthy ability to deal with monthly hormonal balance – then you do need protein 🙂

An average woman needs 0.8g of protein per 1 kg of body weight. If you are 50kgs, you need 40grams of protein per day.

For context one cup of dal has 6g of protein. It’s very likely that for a lot of us the quantity of protein supplied through the diet is not enough to meet the body’s requirements for protein. There is a definite need for supplementation in such a situation or improving the daily diet.

People today are consuming protein powders to meet the body’s need for protein and to make up for the lack of nutrients in their everyday meals. They are commonly consumed by people who are trying to lose weight, build lean muscle mass and improve muscle strength.

There are varieties of protein supplements available in the market. The most popular ones are Whey and Pea protein.

Source and How its made

Whey: It is an animal source of protein

Whey is the by-product of ‘paneer’ making? When we make paneer from milk, the water that we drain out is processed to remove fat and carbohydrate. It is mixed with sweetener and other additives before it is dried and packaged as “Whey protein”.

Pea protein: It is a plant source of protein

Pea protein is made from Pisum sativum or the yellow pea. First the outer covering of pea is removed. Then the peas are dried and milled. Then the powder is poured in water to remove starch and fibers (by wet filtration and centrifugation). What remains is pea protein.

Composition and Protein content

An ideal protein product should contain all essential amino acids and BCAAs (Branched Chain Amino Acids). BCAAs are forms of the amino acid which can help build muscles.

Whey – It is a complete protein containing all the amino acids and Branched Chain Amino Acids which are ideal to build muscles.

Pea protein – Is also a complete protein containing essential amino acids (ones not made by the body) and contains BCAAs.

Suitability for women

Whey protein might not suit many because it contains lactose.

Lactose intolerance is seen in 60 to 65 % of the Indian population. People whose bodies cannot digest or break down lactose which is a sugar contained in milk. It is characterized by bloating and severe stomach pain/ digestive issues.

Pea protein – It suits a greater number of people. It doesn’t cause bloating and is easier on the digestive system.

Pea protein can be mixed and consumed with a variety of foods compared to whey. This makes pea protein more versatile than whey.

Other differences?

Whey – A lot of whey protein in the market contains artificial sweeteners like acesulfame k, sucralose, aspartame, and maltodextrin. These offer less satiety and make you feel hungry too quickly. They are also harmful to health and liver. Whey protein contains is highly processed and, in the process, loses vitamins and minerals. The manufacturing process is not eco-friendly. We recommend you be very careful and watch out for the above ingredients if you do prefer to buy Whey protein.

Pea protein – It contains natural fibers and can reduce the release of Ghrelin. Ghrelin is a protein in the body which makes you feel hungry. Less of Ghrelin means that it offers satiety for longer periods of time.

Pea protein is less processed, so it contains many naturally occurring plant vitamins and minerals Vitamin K (found especially in fresh peas), manganese, folate, copper, phosphorus, and B Vitamins. It is also a greener product or manufacturing it has less impact on the environment.

The market is flooded with protein products. Are you looking for something that is natural, nourishing, delicious, satiating, free of preservatives, free of unsafe sweeteners and good for women?
